The New-Man Porsche 956C is one of the most iconic Group C race cars, instantly recognizable for its yellow, white, and black New-Man livery and its legendary success in endurance racing. Developed by Porsche in the early 1980s, the 956C was a technological masterpiece, featuring a 2.65-liter turbocharged flat-six engine that produced around 620 horsepower and a revolutionary ground-effect aerodynamic design that provided immense downforce for high-speed stability. The New-Man 956C was fielded by Joest Racing, a privateer team that took on the dominant factory Porsche squad and other top endurance racing teams. Despite being a non-factory entry, the car proved to be a formidable competitor, showcasing both Porsche’s engineering excellence and Joest Racing’s racecraft.
The most famous achievement of the New-Man Porsche 956C came at the 1984 and 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it secured back-to-back victories, cementing its place in motorsport history. In 1984, the car, driven by Klaus Ludwig and Henri Pescarolo, took the overall win, demonstrating its incredible speed and reliability. The following year, Joest Racing repeated the feat with the same chassis, making it one of the few cars to win Le Mans twice. This remarkable success helped establish Joest Racing as one of the most successful privateer teams in endurance racing. Today, the New-Man Porsche 956C remains a legendary symbol of Group C dominance and one of the most revered race cars in Porsche’s illustrious history.
