The Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type R Version 3 was a true enthusiast’s machine, built as a homologation special for rallying while delivering raw driving thrills on the road. Introduced in 1996, it was based on the two-door GC8 chassis, making it lighter and more rigid than the standard four-door WRX models. This version of the Type R benefitted from significant improvements, including a revised EJ20 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four engine producing 276bhp, mated to a close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox with a driver-controlled center differential (DCCD). This setup allowed drivers to adjust torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, giving the car incredible adaptability across different surfaces—whether tarmac, gravel, or snow.
In addition to its rally-inspired drivetrain, the Type R Version 3 featured a quicker steering rack, reinforced chassis, and weight-saving measures, all aimed at enhancing performance. The aerodynamics were tweaked with a larger rear wing, while the interior remained driver-focused with STi-branded bucket seats and minimal luxuries. Compared to earlier versions, the Version 3 refined the suspension setup and improved overall handling, making it one of the sharpest iterations of the GC8 STi models. As a foundation for Subaru’s legendary 22B STi, the WRX STi Type R Version 3 remains a sought-after classic, revered for its purity, mechanical engagement, and connection to Subaru’s dominant World Rally Championship legacy.
